Heri Dono (born in Jakarta on 12 June 1960) is an Indonesian contemporary artist known for his unique paintings and creative installations displayed in many museums around the world. He studied at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts in Yogyakarta and began his career in the 1980s. His art is inspired by traditional wayang stories, which include visual elements, chants, sound, storytelling, social criticism, humor, and myths. He mixes these elements with multimedia to create lively and interactive works. His paintings often show wild, imaginative shapes based on wayang characters, combined with his interest in cartoons, animation, and comics. Heri Dono has joined more than 300 exhibitions and many international biennales, and he has received awards such as the Prince Claus Award from the Netherlands, the UNESCO Prize, and the Adhikarya Rupa Award from the Indonesian government.
